Fumonisin B1 is hepatoxic (causing liver damage) and nephrotoxic (causing kidney damage) to animals and is the known cause of diseases such as equine leukoencephalomalacia and porcine pulmonary oedema syndrome. The toxin causes disturbed sphingolipid metabolism and cardiovascular dysfunction in both diseases.
