| Background Information | Borealin (UniProt: Q53HL2; also known as Cell division cycle-associated protein 8; Dasra-B; hDasra-B; Pluripotent embryonic stem cell-related gene 3 protein) is encoded by the CDCA8 (also known as PESCRG3) gene (Gene ID: 55143) in human. Borealin is a novel 31-kDa chromosomal passenger protein that is conserved among all vertebrates. It is a member of the chromosomal passenger holocomplex along with Aurora B, INCENP, and survivin. This complex play a vital role at the centromere to ensure proper chromosome alignment and segregation. Borealin is required for stability of the bipolar mitotic spindle and for kinetochore error correction. Borealin levels are reported to increase during G2/M phase and are reduced following exit from the M phase of cell cycle. Depletion of Borealin by RNAi is shown to retard mitotic progression and cause spindle T misattachment and abnormalities. Borealin-depleted cells are shown to align their chromosomes to a near normal metaphase plate, but they abruptly undergo multipolar anaphases. |
