| Background Information | Interferon beta is a globular protein consisting of 5 alpha helices with a predicted molecular weight of 20 kDa. Due to glycosylation, however, the observed molecular weight is closer to 25 kDa by SDS-PAGE. |

| Application Notes | Interferon neutralization: 2 x 10e5 neutralization units/mL where one neutralization unit is the amount of antiserum required to neutralize one unit of human interferon beta (Hu-IFN-b) to a 50% endpoint. Interferon was titrated with the use of the cytopathic effect inhibition assay as described [Rubinstein, S., Familletti, P.C., and Pestka, S. (1981) "Convenient Assay for Interferons," in J. Virol., Vol. 37, 755-758]; [Familletti, P.C., Rubinstein, S., and Pestka, S. (1981) "A Convenient and Rapid Cytopathic Effect Inhibition Assay for Interferon," in Methods of Enzymology, Vol. 78 (S. Pestka, ed.), Academic Press, New York, 387-394]. In this antiviral assay for interferon about 1 unit/mL of interferon is the quantity necessary to produce a cytopathic effect of 50%. The units are determined with respect to the international reference standard for human interferon beta provided by the National Institutes of Health [see Pestka, S. (1986) "Interferon Standards and General Abbreviations," in Methods in Enzymology (S. Pestka, ed.), Academic Press, New York 119, 14-23]. This material is prepared specifically for the effective neutralization of human interferon beta. Immunohistochemistry Western blot: 1:5000 Immunoprecipitation ELISA Optimal working dilutions must be determined by end user. |

| UniProt Summary | FUNCTION: SwissProt: P05231 # IL-6 is a cytokine with a wide variety of biological functions: it plays an essential role in the final differentiation of B-cells into Ig-secreting cells, it induces myeloma and plasmacytoma growth, it induces nerve cells differentiation, in hepatocytes it induces acute phase reactants. SIZE: 212 amino acids; 23718 Da SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted. PTM: N- and O-glycosylated. DISEASE: SwissProt: P05231 # Genetic variations in IL6 are associated with susceptibility to systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis [MIM:604302]. Systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is juvenile chronic arthritis associated with severe, debilitating, extraarticular features, and occasionally fatal complications. Despite medical treatment, many children still experience early joint destruction, necessitating surgical replacement. & At least 1 polymorphism in the IL6 gene renders HIV- infected men susceptible to Kaposi sarcoma [MIM:148000]. Kaposi sarcoma is a sarcoma of spindle cells mixed with angiomatous tissue. A relatively rare malignant skin tumor that results in multifocal purplish coloured papules or plaques that eventually form nodules. Most commonly seen in patients who suffer from AIDS. SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P05231 ## Belongs to the IL-6 superfamily. |
