Tryptone is an assortment of peptides formed by the digestion of casein by the protease trypsin. This digest can act as a source of nitrogen and amino acids for microorganisms and is used to supplement media in the cultivation of bacteria and fungi (particularly anaerobic bacteria).
Tryptone has high levels of free amino acids, particularly an abundance of tryptophan. Tryptone has no detectable carbohydrates, thus It is useful for differentiation of bacteria based on their ability to ferment carbohydrates.
