| Background Information | Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (UniProt Q14011; also known as A18 hnRNP, Glycine-rich RNA-binding protein CIRP) is encoded by the CIRBP (also known as A18HNRNP, CIRP) gene (Gene ID 1153) in human. CIRP is an 18-kDa RNA-binding protein with an RNA recognition motif (RRM; a.a. 6-84) and a glycine-rich domain (a.a. 92-158). CIRP migrates from nucleus to cytoplasm, where it mediates posttranscriptional regulation of target mRNAs. Originally characterized and named as a cold-induced protein, CIRP exerts antiapoptotic and cell-protective effects in response to cold stress, as well as other stimuli such as UV irradiation and hypoxia. CIRP is expressed in a broad range of tissues (e.g. testis, brain, lung, kidney, liver, stomach, bone marrow, and heart) and upregulated CIRP levels have been reported in several types of cancers. CIRP knockdown is reported to increase p53 level and enhance cancer cells chemo-sensitivity to DNA damage inducing drugs. Likewise, CIRP overexpression results in p53 downregulation. |
