| Source/Purification | Monoclonal antibody is produced by immunizing animals with recombinant protein specific to the carboxy terminus of human β-synuclein protein. |
| Background | The synuclein family, consisting of α-synuclein, β-synuclein, and γ-synuclein, are a group of small, soluble proteins containing a highly conserved α-helical lipid-binding motif. α-synuclein and β-synuclein are primarily expressed in brain tissue, where they colocalize within presynaptic terminals (1,2). α-synuclein is linked genetically and neuropathologically to Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, called synucleinopathies, characterized by the presence of intracellular α-synuclein aggregates, the main component of Lewy bodies (3,4). β-synuclein has been shown to inhibit α-synuclein aggregation and ameliorate α-synuclein neurotoxicity (5-7). Studies have shown that β-synuclein levels are elevated in early and advanced Alzheimer’s disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and traumatic brain injury, showing strong potential for use as a synaptic damage biomarker (8-9). |
